Keeping a good head

When it comes to hair, most people would think the most expensive type of shampoo is always the best for their hair. However it might be just the opposite. In fact the wrong type of shampoo might lead to scalp problems and inevitable the hair problems.

To get to the root of the matter, you need to know about your own scalp. First treat your scalp make sure its happy and healthy, then your hair will be beautiful.  How do you know the condition of your scalp? Is it oily, is it dry, is it infected?

So called wanna be hair specialists, stylists and the odd sales assistants would always try to push their brand of shampoo, or what they might think is best for our hair. They base their assumptions visually, what they see with their naked eye.

Their sliver tongue will always convince us that their diagnostics is the correct one, that is until our hair starts falling off, or even flakes and dry skin starts falling out of our head. Have it diagnosed the correct way, scan it, find out if the shampoo we’re using is the correct one. Find out if our scalp is happy, or is it riddled with infection. What can’t be seen with the naked eye could always be revealed by the scanner.

IA Salon has a scanner where it will ultimately diagnose not only the condition of the scalp, and the hair but also will let you know if the shampoo you are using is the correct one. The scanner which multiplies by 200, scans right to the roots, and the scalp. It will not only help diagnose the condition of the scalp and the hair but also with the help of professionals, will be able to give the right treatment it is needed.

My scalp revealed a lot of stress lines, and because it was oily, a lot of my hair follicles were blocked by the access oil. Invisible to the naked eye, it can be clearly seen through the powerful scanner.

According to hair guru, Cecilia Lee, Manager of IA Salon, it is always recommended to have two types of shampoos. This is to keep the treat the scalp varying on its condition. For example if you’re out in the sun, and sweating, the scalp will be oily, and this will block new hair follicles to emerge from the scalp, and if you’re in an air conditioned room for most of the week, most likely the scalp will be dry.

She said that it doesn’t really matter what brand the shampoo is, or the price tag on the shampoo, as long as it is suitable for the scalp, then it is good for the hair. Using the right shampoo varying on the condition of the scalp will help improve its condition and ultimately helps keep healthier hair.

People often forget about their scalp, their main focus is the hair. And why shouldn’t it since we almost never see our own scalp, but that is where the root of all the problems or solution lies. Keep the scalp healthy, and free of infection or problems and the hair will surely benefit.  Everything is connected, the body must also be healthy and relaxed, with good blood circulation will help benefit the scalp and the hair.

Relaxation helps the circulation of the blood, and in turn will help the blood flow to the head which will help improve the condition of the scalp.

Scalp treatment, with the full spa treatment is available at IA salon, where not only do they advise customers on the right treatment for their scalp but the scalp scanner will reveal the true condition of the scalp. The scanner is free for those who care enough about their scalp, the spa treatment available will rejuvenate and relaxes not only the body, but also will provide the right treatment for the scalp and the hair.

Itchy head, dry, flacky scalps, dandruff, even oily scalp are all problems  related to the improper care of the head. Not enough washing, the wrong conditioner or shampoo, or even too much washing.

Ignorance may bliss, but in this case we cannot afford to be ignorant about proper scalp care, not if we want to keep our hair beautiful and shiny. As we get older the more care we need to give to our scalp, this is because of the conditions we go through and of course the toxics, pollutions and environment that we are exposed to on a daily basis.

Why not try the scalp scanner, its been here for 5 years, yet nobody seems to know about it. The scanning is free, so why not give it a try and keep your scalp healthy, and your hair beautiful, strong and shiny.

Schools combats smoking through fun activities

Why can’t I be still be in school? Schools in Brunei are becoming more and more proactive in promoting health, education as well as life lessons, and motivation, where now the emphasis is education starts in school, but continues on in life.

One such program which had caught my attention was the Anti smoking campaign – a gateway to drug addiction organised by Cluster 1 schools and the Narcotics Control bureau. It was a two day campaign but it was a very intensive two day program, with seminars, games, performances and activities such as the explorace not only for students but also for teachers.

“As effective school health program can be one of the most cost effective investments a nation can make to simultaneously improve education and health” WHO Director – General, April 2000)

Nicotine is a drug. People don’t realize how devastating is and the “silent” effect of nicotine. It is addictive like many drugs and gets absorbed into the bloodstream. Six to seven seconds later the brain can feel the reaction.

We all know that smoking is bad, and there are a lot of consequences from prolong use or inhalation with effects affecting the brain, muscles, organs and fertility, but how do we get the message across to the public, let alone teenagers and youths who are very active and at times have very short attention span.

One such collage which has been proactive in promoting health awareness as well as educating and motivating students in a dynamic and innovative fashion, organizing various programs, and events which caters to the highly active minds and bodies of teen boys.

By designing the program with value added values and games which helps teens learn while having fun has been so far successful in getting the message across, hence the anti smoking program has been compiled with jumbled with talks on awarness not only about the dangers of drugs and smoking but also on HIV, AIDs and STDs.

Competitions such as essays, drawings and drama performances based on the theme  – Stop Smoking (Adang tah Bersigup) has been effective in raising the awarness of the students about the dangers of smoking.

Meanwhile the drawings, and essays as well as other creative work done by the students during the program had been exhibited in a special exhibit where each school will be able to show case the exhibit in their own respective school when the program is over.

In fact the program is not only aimed at students, teachers in particular disciplined teachers are not left out, with talks on social issues given by the Community Development Department (JAPEM), highlighting on the issues which not only affects youths of the country but also social issues that have plagued the nation.

Again I ask why can’t I be in school when all these programs are designed to help students , youths as well as teachers in improving themselves, their families, friends and the community on the whole.

Education starts at home, schools and collages helps refine them, its up to the individuals themselves to make something of it. With the right guidance, motivation and direction, the youths of this country could become something even more than just a leader they can be more than just a person with caliber, they can reach for the stars and beyond leading the country into a better and brighter future with integrity and respect.

Disciplinary teachers attend anti smoking talk

Smoking kills. It doesn’t kill immediately but gradually and with it comes various chronic diseases where its effects gets worse at the later stages.

Smoking is a silent killer, its worse that drugs, its influence reaches to all aspects of society, no one is spared, young, old, rich or poor. Individuals today must be more proactive in combating the effects of tobacco for the good of the whole society.

The deputy principle of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Collage (SOAS), Hj Roslan bin Hj Md Hassan said this during a social issues briefing conducted for disciplinary teachers from all secondary schools in Brunei Darussalam. The briefing was held at SOAS Collage auditorium, where over 300 disciplinary teachers attended.

He said that tobacco companies have used various ways to attract society to smoke more, adverts portraying a luxurious lifestyle, as well as smoking adverts in sports events, indirectly portraying that smoking is good for sports.

He explained that some tobacco companies even added flavours to their cigarettes, such as strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, to appeal to different consumers. At some  point, there are even cigarette shaped candies, which appeals to children, and exposing them to cigarettes at a very young age.

Fortunately he said that there are various parties and individuals who have been proactive in the fight against cigarette smoking, as well as raising awareness on the dangers of cigarette smoking and second hand smoke.

In fact there are various examples of major sporting events which have banned adverts from tobacco company, even though the tobacco companies are one of their biggest advertisers.

“We as teachers also play a vital role in teaching students on the dangers of smoking. Disciplinary teachers must also remember that we are here to help, and to give consol to those students with disciplinary problems, and not just to punish them when they are out of control,” he said.

He said that as disciplinary teachers it is their duty to always point out the mistakes of the students and discipline them so that they will be wary of their mistakes in the future.  In fact those students, who are always in trouble, will always remember the discipline teachers especially when they are older. They would always say that, the disciplinary teacher would always steer me in the right path if I’m ever at fault. It is because of those teachers that I am the person I am today.

Concluding his speech he hopes that all individual present will be active in stopping smoking amongst students as well as the community, and aspire to make Brunei Darussalam a country free of smoke.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN Selasa 16 Mac – Penularan berbagai penyakit akibat penggunaan rokok.

Aids Awarness

H.I.V and A.I.D.S are on the rise in the Sultanate as well as other sexually transmitted diseases (STD). It is important the youths of today learn about the dangers of STDS and HIVs, as well as be aware on how the diseases are contracted.

Medical Officer, from the Ministry of Health, Dr Ahmad Fakhri Junaidi, who had conducted a talk on HIV and STDS said that it is important start early prevention or intervention in the case of STDS and HIV.

Unlike other form of diseases, these diseases will only be transmitted, via blood, sharing needles and sexual intercourse.

He specified that Abstinence, being faithful to their partner and the use of contraceptives are a few of the ways of reducing the number of HIV and STDs in the country. He also talked about the early symptoms of the HIV and STDs as well as cure for some STD diseases.

Meanwhile 300 students took part in a seminar aimed at raising the awareness on AIDS and STDs. The seminar and workshop was conducted by the AIDS Council Brunei, as part of the Anti  Smoking Campaign organised by the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Collage, Department of Guidance and Counselling and Cluster 1 Schools.

The workshop focused on the students’ understanding of STDs as well as HIV, and had dispelled some rumours and myths concerning people with HIV and AIDS.

One of the most important lessons that was taught that people with HIV and AIDS are just like regular people, there are hardly any distinctions, however for those who have the disease, they are sometimes abandoned by their friends and family.

This is not a healthy attitude to have, and that the people who have the HIV virus and AIDS disease need the support of their family and friends more than ever.  The discrimination and prejudice for people with HIV cannot and must not go on, Islam has taught us to treat each other with respect and in fairness, no matter what their race or religion.

Around 33.4 million people are living with HIV and this increase (compared to 33.2 million in 2007) can be attributed to continued high levels of new infections as well as the beneficial impact of improved access to Anti-retroviral treatment. Whilst it is good news that less people are dying from AIDS related illnesses (5,500 daily, compared to 5,700 in 2007), for every two people treated, five people become newly infected.

Brunei’s profile in the HIV/AIDS situation as of November 2009 stands at a cumulative total of 56 known cases of which more than 70 per cent are men. According to the latest figures, the male to female HIV ratio in Brunei stands at 3:5:1.
