Brunei’s paraglider in critical condition

Brunei’s pioneer Paraglider, Junaidi Hj Jumat is in critical condition after a freak accident left him in a comatose state.

According to those closest to him, he was on Tungku beach training a para glider enthusiast. There were no plans to fly, in fact it was just a kiting training on the ground. Kiting is one of the first step of training every paraglider has to go through before they are allowed to fly.

His trainee said that it all happened so fast. They’ve just finished their first session, and he was ready to pack his things.  He was not facing Junaidi when the incident happened. All of a sudden he said that he heard a loud crash, and saw that Junaidi was on the ground.

He and Junaidi’s son who was on the scene, rushed to aid him. It was believed that a sudden gust of wind had carried Junaidi, when he was still on the ground getting ready to pack his gear, while his harness was still attached to para chute.

When they were at Junaidi’s side they could see that Junaidi had landed face first on to the hard ground. The paramedics was immediately called and he was rushed to RIPAS hospital.

Friends and families flocked to the emergency room, where he was diagnosed to be in very critical condition. At the moment he is on respirator, and is still unconscious.  His friends and families hopes that he is strong enough to pull through where doctors have said that his life is hanging by a thread.

Last night a hajat prayers was held by his family and members of PEMODA (of which Junaidi is a member of), advocating Allah’s mercy and grace for his swift recovery.

Junaidi Hj Jumat along with his wife Siti Khadijah are the first Brunei Pioneer paragliders, where they have represented Brunei Darussalam in an unofficial capacity, to numerous world paragliding events. They’ve competed and won several regional events organised by Malaysia and Indonesia, and are well known in the paragliding community in the region.

This year it was announced that the SEA Games in Indonesia will be holding the first ever paragliding event, and Junaidi along with Siti, have been seeking members to join the paragliding wagon, so that Brunei may compete in the event.

Junaidi’s brother-in-law, explained that Junaidi’s condition is very, very critical, and that he has suffered a fractured skull along with several broken bones. He said that although Junaidi is very experienced, accidents such as this could not be foreseen.

It shows us how life is fragile, we can only hope for the best for Junaidi, and he urges fellow members and those who knows him, to pray for his swift recovery.

STPRI’s Mini Carnival

The Raja Isteri Girls High School’s Mini Carnival was an outstanding success as scores of students from other schools had not only attended the mini carnival but had also taken part in some of the events organised.

The event organised by STPRI’s Parent Teacher Association together with STPRI’s administration was part of the end of year program, where students, teachers and parents can unwind after the exams.

There is nothing small about this year’s mini carnival. There were quad bike rides, horse rides, netball and football tournaments, on top of that there were food and beverage booths along with product booths, all of which are manned by students, teachers and parents.

Deputy Principal Pg Hj Yussof, said that the aim of the event is to foster closer relations between members of the PTA and STPRI’s teachers and staff.  The students, teachers as well as all those involved had fun today. Their dedication and commitment to the mini carnival is commendable, where they’ve not only made the event a success but had also attracted students from other schools to view and take part in the events.

The one day event held at STPRI’s compound was great way to unwind after the hectic school year. In particular the exams, challenges and obstacles the students and teachers faced during the year.  What was interesting was that other students from nearby schools also joined in the fun. After all it was open for the public.

Parents and teachers were particularly worried about the attendance of school boys mixing with the girls of the school. They were being watched carefully to ensure that there was no wrong doing, especially with their behaviour around the girls.

Pg Hj Yussof had complemented the efforts of the parents and students who had worked tirelessly for the upcoming of the mini carnival. They wanted it to succeed as much as we do. In fact through their efforts this was the best mini carnival STPRI had ever seen and it was also thanks to them that we’ve been able to attract as many visitors to the mini carnival.

Students paints smiles on special children

Giving is always better than receiving, so we’re taught. In fact by being charitable we learn humility and learn that our selfless act will always be remembered by those we are kind to.

As members of the community we are responsible for each other’s welfare, and that we must always remember to take care of our own, not only in times of needs, but also in times of joy.

When we bring happiness to a group of people it will always bring us joy, however that gesture is so much more memorable to those in the receiving end. The Peer guidance councillors (Pembimbing Rakan Sebaya, PRS) and Girl Scouts of Maktab Duli Pengiran Al Muhtaddee Billah, Gadong had organised several activities with residents of Pusat Ehsan, in a bid to bring them joy and happiness.

Md Khairul Rafi’udin President of PRS said that this was a good opportunity for students to get in touch with others in the community in particular those with special needs. We’re actually very excited with the prospect of meeting with the residents and having a get together with them.

We hope that this will not be the first and last event with the residents. We need students as well as the community to be aware of the special needs of residents such as the ones in Pusat Ehsan. Their welfare is our welfare, their needs far outweighs ours, and we need to care enough, to love enough so that special needs people throughout our community know that we care, we love and we will always be for them.

He said that 40 members of the PRS and Girls Guide had volunteered to spend the day with residents of Pusat Ehsan. He said that they had organised activites included colouring contests, performances by the MD students as well as the residents of Pusat Ehsan.

He explained that the group had actually raised the money from charity work, through school activities. The money we raised we used to buy presents and gifts for the residents of pusat ehsan. We hope that our small gesture will help spread some joy and happiness to the residents, as they are members of a very special group, a group where we must all be aware of, and care for.

Latest MAC collection – Tartan Tales & Winter collection

The M.A.C. Tartan tale, and Winter Collection are here. IA Salon Manager Cecilia Lee announced that the latest M.A.C. products are now on display and available. She said these products are hot off the market and are of limited edition.

In fact she says that because these products are of limited edition, it is difficult to get them in our region, and that M.A.C. will only produce a limited number and will not replicate it in the future.  The colours of the M.A.C. collection is made different for each market.

For example, the same product and colours may not be obtained in Europe, because it is made specifically for the Asian market.

She explains that usually a few weeks before the collection is even published in fashion magazines in Asia, we at IA Salon have already obtained the collection and is on display. One of the reasons why we obtain the products early is part of our commitment and service to our customers to keep them up to date with latest technology and trends.

She explains that the M.A.C. mineralize winter collection is one of the best in the market where Ingredients in the product helps protect and improves the skin. This is the technology of modern products. The molecules in the ingredients actually actively helps improves the skin, where moisturizers are embedded in the ingredients itself.

Even a little amount used will bring out the best effect of the colours. This means that it is easier and faster to apply and in turn will save money in the long run.

While the Tartan Tale collection is fresh off the M.A.C. label and is the latest in their collection of makeup.

She says that there are knock offs, in the market, where it claims to be the same as the original however buyers beware.

Why buy original and not knock offs? There are several obvious reasons, however some may not know that knock offs do not carry the same ingredients and formula patented in the original. In fact knock offs may damage the skin after prolong usage, and although the same colour and effect may be obtained, one would have to use more of the product to reach the same effect.

Each time new collections are made; there are always improvements in the technology and ingredients being used. Of course it is up to customers’ preference in which product that they are more comfortable with, however they must be knowledgeable of their products and understand that in keeping up a good appearance we must always remember to  protect our skin, and not damage it with uncertain and poor quality products.Lates

Prepare financial before starting a family

For those who wants to start a family they have to remember that their earnings no longer belong to them alone, but their earnings will be for the family they are about to have.

They have to allocate a sum of their earnings for their future. They must save not only for their future but also for their children’s future.

This was stated during a briefing on smart savings and financial planning by the Employees Trust Fund Department, Head of the Corporate Communication Department, Rosli Hj Harun during a briefing to would be bridegrooms who will be starting their own family soon.

He said that employees have to contribute five per cent of their basic salary and another five per cent will be contributed by their employer

he Employees Trust Fund, through its Corporate Communications Department, held a briefing on TAP and the Supplementary Contributory Pension (SCP) for newly registered employees at the Ministry of Finance building yesterday.

The main objective was to gain knowledge and increase awareness on the fund schemes made available to the local employees in the public and private sectors.

Awg Rosli Hj Haron, Acting, said that he accumulated fund will be retained for the employees as fixed savings for their retirement. Each individual can qualify to withdraw finances under the following schemes: 55-year withdrawal scheme, 50-year withdrawal scheme, those desiring to purchase or build a new house, those who are severely injured, emigration, and next-of-kin

He had also touched upon SCP which complements the existing TAP scheme, and ensures that employees who meet the SCP prescribed requirements will receive a monthly minimum of $150. The SCP scheme also offers benefits such as Derivative SCP and the Survivorship to accommodate the individual’s family member in the event of the recipient passing away before reaching the mandatory age of 60.

Meanwhile BIBD Wealth Management Unit Manager Dayang Nurul Jafriah bte Abdullah explains several techniques on financial planning, in particular when starting a family.

Starting a family is not as easy as we think. We sometimes forget about the amount of finances we need to build a family. After the wedding and honeymoon period, the real life begins. In this life the couple will share responsibilities and burdens for their family. At least half of their income if not most of their income will be needed to start a family, and once a baby arrives, their spending will have a sharp increase.

Hence we need a nest egg for our future and that through several financial schemes it can ensure a stable finaincal future for families and it is always better to start young, when financial commitment is not as large.

The financial planning talk aimed to promote the importance of financial management, to avoid potential budget crisis and to make plan for savings and investment

Takaful Executives off to ASEAN Youth Insurance Manager program

Takaful is an Islamic insurance which is grounded in Islamic muamalat (banking transactions),
observing the rules and regulations of Islamic law. This concept has been practised in various forms
for over 1400 years where Muslim jurists acknowledge that the basis of shared responsibility in the
system of aquila as practised between Muslims of Mecca and Medina laid the foundation of mutual
insurance.

This concept is brought forward to the modern world where we today practice, and as to further
enhance in the services of takaful as well as the concept and insurance on the whole, two Takaful
Brunei Am/General and Takaful Brunei Keluarga executive officers will be participating in the ASEAN
Insurance Youth Managers in the Philippines.

Takaful Brunei Am/General, Executive officer Pg Hj Baharuddin Alim Shah bin Pg Hj Kamaruddin and
Head of Underwriting and Retakaful, Takaful Brunei Keluarga, Fuad Hamdi bin Pehin Dato Hj Salim,
will be learning from the best the insurance industry has to offer at the AYIM program that will be
held from 20- 26 November 2010.

Pg Hj Baharuddin said that some Muslims believe insurance is unnecessary, as society should
help its victims. Others believe that Muslims should not ignore the fact that they live, trade and
communicate with open global systems, and the need for banking and insurance. We believe in
creating Muslim-friendly banking systems and a workable insurance framework by which Muslims
can compete with non-Muslims in business and have cover in daily life.

He said that in the Quran, Surah Al-Maidah, verse 2, states “Basis of Co-operation Help one another
in al-Birr and in al-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety): but do not help one another in sin and
transgression”.

“We believe in helping the community in Brunei Darussalam, and through Islamic insurance we
are able to achieve that. The fundamentals and principals of Islamic Insurance Takaful is that
policyholders cooperate among themselves for their common good, every policyholder pays his
subscription to help those that need assistance, losses are divided and liabilities spread according
to the community pooling system, uncertainty is eliminated in respect of subscription and
compensation, and that it does not derive advantage at the cost of others,” he said.

He explained that Takaful is perceived as cooperative or mutual insurance, where members
contribute a certain sum of money to a common pool. The purpose of this system is not profits but
to uphold the principle of “bear ye one another’s burden.”

Commercial insurance is strictly not allowed for Muslims as agreed upon by most contemporary
scholars because it contains elements of Al-Gharar (Uncertainty), Al-Maisir (Gambling) and Riba
(Interest).

The AYIM will be able to expand our understanding of Insurance on the whole and with the
knowledge and experienced gained from the AYIM program, he and his counterpart will be able to
share the knowledge with fellow insurance practitioners with the hope of providing better services
and facilities to the general public.
