Organising end of year trips and tours is traditional for almost everyone in Brunei, taking advantage of the school holidays, parents would take their children on trips abroad for some much needed rest and relaxation.

Biker clubs and associations are no different. However instead of rest, these hardcore road warriors would take their machines and challenge the elements, spending hours on end on the open road. That is how bikers relax, the open road, good company, and stories to tell on their journey.

Melding man and machine into one component, bikers ride for their enjoyment, and in line with tradition here in Brunei, biker associations, clubs and individual bikers would organise tours around Borneo.

The Temburong bikers Association are no different. This year they have announced that they will be touring Pontianak, Kalimantan. A 2500km journey from Temburong to Pontianak, where they will meet up with their fellow biker brothers from IMBI.

IA Salon and Lady bikers raise awarness on breast cancer

In conjunction with the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, IA Salon and Brunei’s Lady Bikers has joined hands in raising the awareness of Breast cancer in Brunei Darussalam.

Brunei  lady bikers along with staff of IA Salon, had distributed pink ribbons to members of the public in recognition to survivors, family and friends of survivors and victims of the disease.

A pink ribbon is worn to recognise the struggle that sufferers face when battling with the cancer. The pink ribbon is an international symbol of breast cancer awareness, and a symbol in honouring the month and commitment to fight against breast cancer.

IA Salon manager Cecilia Lee said that the breast cancer awareness drive by the Salon and the Brunei Lady bikers is an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness to the public. She said that the pink ribbons distributed on the day are a show of commitment by IA Salon staff and members of the Brunei Lady Bikers on the support of the Breast Cancer awareness month.

They hoped that during the day that everyone in the mall will be wearing the pink ribbons distributed by the lady bikers and IA Salon staff.  She explained that the breast cancer awareness drive is part of the IA Salon’s 6th year anniversary, where in previous years, charity events are organised to mark the anniversary.

Meanwhile, two young teen boys also joined the band wagon and volunteered to help in raising awareness during the event. They said that during their research on breast cancer they have found that not only women suffer from the disease.  Men get it too. Although its a small percentage, but there are cases where men have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

They also said that they were also shocked to discover a little girl in Canada has contracted the disease at an early age. At the age of 4, she is the youngest person ever to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Doctors are dumbfounded with the discovery and have no explanation on how a little girl could be diagnosed with the disease.

They said that they cannot begin to imagine the pain and suffering one goes through when they discover that they have breast cancer. From the testimonials of breast cancer survivors and breast cancer suffers they’ve been able to see glimpses of the trials and challenges the individuals have gone through.

Through the breast cancer awareness drive they hope they can make a difference and an impact on raising the breast cancer awareness in Brunei.

There is still not enough awareness on breast cancer in Brunei. In fact not many groups raise their hands in creating public awareness; we hope we changed that today. Our thoughts and prayers goes to the individuals as well as families of breast cancers survivors and we bring a message of hope to those individuals who are still fighting breast cancer, know that our thoughts and prayers are with you, and you will always have our support.

Bitter Sweet experience for Brunei Paragliding Team

brunei paragliding team in Bahau Malaysia

brunei paragliding team in Bahau Malaysia

It was touch and go for the Brunei Team competing in the Jempol Paragliding Team in Bahau, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. Not only was it a first experience for the Brunei team to compete in an endurance event but it was a bitter sweet experience as Siti Khadijah had to sit out for the rest of the three day tournament after she got injured during her second day of time trials in the endurance event.

Junaidi Hj Jumat said that it was the first time for them to compete in an endurance challenge, the spot or accurate landing event was cancelled and only the endurance challenge was being competed in.

This had not only put a hole in their strategy but also on every other team that had hoped to score in the accurate landing event. He said that in all the international competitions that was held in Indonesia and Jugra Malaysia, they had only competed in the spot landing event.bru para

Meanwhile Siti Khadijah said that the injury she had received was due to the uneven ground when she had landed. She said that she had accidently stepped into a hole and had fallen on a sharp rock where it had cut her hand deeply.

In paragliding you need your hands to not only steer the glider, but also to erect it prior to takeoff. Hence with her hand bandaged up and she can hardly hold a spoon. She again flew on the last day of the carnival, but again had crash landed due to her earlier injury.

The particular landing area had also caused the injury of a British Paraglider, where his foot was caught on a rock, causing the bone to jut out of his ankle.

The gliding spot in Bahau, is particularly tricky, as the air currents and thermals are unpredictable. In particular when approaching a certain landing area, at times the thermal updraft just would not allow the paraglider to land, and they will be thermalling for over half an hour.

Team captain Hj  Mohammad Shafri bin Hj Mohd Salleh said that if nothing else this is a good experience for the team, as not only are they able to hunt for thermals they are also able to soar high and stay in the air longer.

He said that although the conditions in Bahau for the carnival has not been very good, with little or no wind and very little thermal, the team are able to stand their grounds amongst the top parasailing pilots  from around the world, who are also finding it difficult to stay in the air for long periods at a time.

He said that during the practice run both Junaidi and Siti had only a short time to get used to the idea of thermaling and finding a good spot for the high lifts. However during the day of the carnival they didn’t manage to get any lift, for two reasons, one was that there were hardly any stable wind for take off, the second was that the thermal would come and go.

Unlike other competitors who had came equipped ready with gliders meant from soaring or cross country, the gliders of Junaidi and Siti’s were not made to soar, but specifically for sport landing. International participants were also frustrated with the turn of events, where most of them had brought equipment and gliders for sport landing and not endurance, or cross country flying.

The participants were only told during the opening briefing that the sport landing competition was cancelled, due to ‘technical’ reasons.

Nevertheless, with the experienced from Bahau, the Brunei team will be more better prepared with any endurance or cross country event, though during this particular competition Brunei didn’t win any places, they had gained invaluable experience in regards to the flying sport discipline.
