SOAS students visits prison deparment

There are delinquents in every school, giving disciplinary teachers no choice be to take disciplinary measures so that they would repent on their actions, however at times it is not enough. In today’s society, students with disciplinary problems are given counselling and re education  in a bid to change their attitude and mind set to become a better student and better member of society.

In a bid to make aware of the penal justice system in the country, 38 students from Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Collage had visited the Jerudong Prison Department.

According to SOASC counsellor, Ahmad bin Hj Sulaiman, the visit by the year 9 students of SOAS are to make them aware of not only the justice system in Brunei Darussalam, but also what happens to those who break the laws in the country.

He said that at the very least those students with disciplinary problems are more aware of what happens to those who break the law, those who have heard of canning do not fully aware of the implications of canning.

The demonstration of canning given by the prison’s officers had dispelled any myths of canning, where the students are now more aware of the canning methods and its results, where they agree that their imagination on canning pales compared to the harsh reality of what canning entails.

Public Relations Officer, Jerudong Prision, Sarjan 265 Roslan bin Dambung had briefed the students on the facilities of the prison’s department, as well as demonstrated on the methods of canning. He had also explained the nature of canning in Brunei Darussalam as well as some of the rules and regulations involved in a canning procedure.

He had also briefed the students on the inmate program of the prison, prior to giving the students a tour of the prison’s gallery, where they had witnessed first hand the handicraft work of the inmates, as well as a replica of the hanging chamber and prison cell.
