Rock Climbing with Stpri Girls

Believe it or not we have a fascination with climbing. As children our curiosity is boundless, there are no sense of danger, there are no boundaries, we want to experience it all, our imagination is boundless so is our energy. As we grow older we’re more aware of the dangers and are more aware of our safety.

In today’s society women are becoming more and more adventurous, they challenge the boundaries of male dominated sports and recreation.  In a bid to introduce an adventurous sport in line with the name of adventure club, 37 members of the STPRI (Raja Isteri Girls High School) adventure club embarked on a rock climbing adventure in the capital.

A standing wall of 15meters is erected right next to a natural waterfall is the site for rock climbing enthusiasts. The picturesque setting not only gives the opportunity for rock climbers to appreciate the beauty of their surroundings but also is a welcome addition to enhancing the beauty of the recreational park of Tasek Lama.

Rock climbing is considered an extreme sport where Rock climbing is compared to skydiving where it is considered to be a little like skydiving. Both rock climbing and skydiving have an element of danger. Both are sports where people participate mostly for their own personal satisfaction, and both are sports where potential participants either “get it” or they don’t. In skydiving, either you are excited about leaping out of a plane into the abyss, or you aren’t. In rock climbing, either you are excited about scaling a vertical piece of stone, or you aren’t.

Now rock climbing involves strength, control and finesse. Using the muscles in your arms and legs to pull yourself up a sheer rock face takes strength and control. It’s not only physically demanding, but also mentally challenging.

You have to think on where to place your hands and feet, there’s also an element of fear especially for beginners. A fear of falling, even though they are securely held by a rope in case they do fall, the fear is there, its ever constant.

There are some lessons to be learned in rock climbing. It empowers self confidence, where it helps climbers, in particular new ones to overcome their fear of heights, pushes them to the limit and beyond, and when they do finally reach their goal, their self esteem and confidence is boosted to a new peak.

The deafening beat of the heart as it drums hard as the adrenalin rushes the system pumping fear and excitement at the same time, as the mind overcomes the stiffening of the muscles as we climb. Sometimes the body freeze and locks in place, as fear takes over, this is where comradeship plays a hand, as those on the ground, encourages the climber to take another step, guides them to the nearest foothold and encourages them on. Exercising self control when the muscles refuse to obey is something of a feat.

The activity also helps promote comradeship, team work, and trust as those on the ground, has a firm grip on the life line, lowering the climber to safety if they slip or fall. The difference between rock climbing and any other activities is that it empowers the mind, heightens the self confidence enhances the senses and muscle control. Its not an activity for all, it takes a special breed to be fully embrace the sport as a way of life.
